Impressive numbers..

Since I am an engineer (by education) and I like dealing with precise numbers, here is the result of my calculations:

85,000,000 x 365 = 31,025,000,000 barrels / year in 2011

with a 7% STEADY yearly growth rate we have:

Dato che di formazione io sono un ingegnere  e mi piace trattare numeri precisi, ecco il risultato dei miei calcoli:

85.000.000 x 365 = 31.025 milioni di barili / anno nel 2011

con un 7% di tasso costante di crescita annuale si ha:

Considerations..

Earlier today I was doing some considerations.. and thinking..

The world’s daily oil consumption is approx. 85 million barrels.. (a day !)

By the end of this year, the world’s total oil consumption will be approx. 31,025,000,000 barrels (31 Billion, 25 Million).

With an average yearly consumption growth rate of 7% (which is an average of the current values, ranging from 5% of G20 nations to 8.5% of China) , next year (end 2012) the world’s oil consumption will be approx. 33 Billion 200 Million barrels.

Keeping the growth rate steady, year on year, by 2015 the world will need approx. 40 Billion 667 Million barrels a year. And by 2020, the world will consume approx. 57 Billion 38 Million barrels a year (you may do the math yourself, it’s very easy).

So with a 7% yearly growth rate, in just 10 years the planet will need almost twice as much oil as it needs today…. In just 10 years (!) Do you think all the oil wells around the world, most of which have already peaked, will be able in 10 years time to supply twice as much as what they provide today? Personally, I don’t think so.

With such big numbers at stake, it’s easy to see that in the next 3 to 5 years, supply will struggle to cope with demand. As a consequence, gasoline price will rise (actually, it is already rising, and fast). Therefore, it will be more and more expensive to use cars, to fly, to warm our houses…

Considerazioni

Proprio oggi stavo facendo alcune considerazioni.. e pensavo..

Il consumo mondiale di petrolio ogni giorno è di ca. 85 milioni di barili .. (al giorno!)

Entro la fine di quest’anno, il consumo totale di petrolio del mondo sarà di circa. 31.025.000.000 barili (31 miliardi, 25 milioni).

Con un tasso medio annuo di crescita dei consumi del 7% (che è una media dei valori correnti, che vanno dal 5% delle nazioni del G20 al 8,5% della Cina), il prossimo anno (fine 2012) il consumo di petrolio del mondo sarà di circa. 33 miliardi 200 milioni di barili.

A mantenere il tasso di crescita costante, anno dopo anno, entro il 2015 il mondo avrà bisogno di ca. 40 miliardi 667 milioni di barili l’anno.

Ed entro il 2020, al mondo si consumeranno circa. 57 miliardi 38 milioni di barili l’anno.

Così, con un tasso di crescita del 7% annuo, in soli 10 anni il pianeta consumera’ quasi il doppio di quanto consuma oggi …. In soli 10 anni (!)

Pensate che tutti i pozzi di petrolio del mondo, molti dei quali hanno già raggiunto il picco, saranno in grado di estrarre il doppio rispetto a quello che estaggono oggi? Personalmente, non lo credo.

Con così grandi numeri in gioco, è facile vedere che nei prossimi 3 – 5 anni, l’offerta avra’ grosse difficolta’ a star dietro alla domanda. Di conseguenza, il prezzo della benzina aumenterà (in realtà, è già in aumento, e veloce). Pertanto, la benzina, il cherosene, il petrolio saranno sempre più costosi… e diventera’ molto piu’ caro usar l’auto, volare, riscaldare le nostre case …

Damn scooters !!

There are scooters passing by in the street all day long, and often during the night as well,  making an unbelievable  noise.

One good thing that the end of oil era will bring is…. that these scooters will stop making noise !!!

Maybe youngsters  will convert them to electric and will continue to go round the city.  But at least, with an electric motor, they will do it  … quietly !!!

Maledetti motorini !!

Ci sono scooter che passano in strada tutto il giorno, e spesso anche la notte facendo un rumore infernale.

Una cosa positiva della fine del petrolio e’ che…  questi motorini smetteranno di fare rumore..

Magari i ragazzi li convertiranno ad elettrico e continueranno a girare per la città…  però almeno, con un motore elettrico, lo faranno … in silenzio !!!!!!

I look around..

I look around myself.. and all I can see are products surrounding me which were made with oil, or derive from oil, or for which oil was used during their manufacturing.

My laptop, I’m writing on right now, my smartphone, my tablet, the remote control of my plasma tv, the Tv set itself, the low-emission led light on my desk, even the French windows in front of me, made of PVC… the radio and the car keys  on the shelf, the picture frames on the wall.. the floor-standing Ikea lamp behind me…. the low-cost  loudspeakers attached to my iPod..

And then, looking around a bit more, I can see the coffee machine and all the other kitchen appliances in that room…. Plus so many, soo many other every-day tools that we all have and all use without even paying attention to them…

..what will we all do once the oil is over?

Will my next laptop be made of wood?  Like in a Flinstones’ cartoon?

Will we still have computers in 20-30 years and all the other plastic-based tools, once the oil is totally gone?

Mi guardo attorno

Mi guardo attorno .. e tutto quello che posso vedere sono i prodotti che mi circondano, tutti  fatti da derivati del petrolio, come la plastica, o per i quali il petrolio è stato utilizzato nel corso della loro produzione.

Il mio portatile, su cui sto scrivendo in questo momento, il mio smartphone, il mio tablet, il telecomando della mia tv al plasma, la Tv stessa, la luce a led a bassa emissione sulla mia scrivania…  anche le finestre di fronte a me, fatte di PVC …  e poi la radiosveglia e le chiavi della macchina che si trovano sulla mensola, le cornici dei quadri sul muro .. la lampada Ikea dietro di me sul pavimento…. gli altoparlanti economici che ho attaccato al mio iPod..

E poi, guardandomi intorno un po ‘di più, vedo la macchina del caffè e tutti gli altri elettrodomestici da cucina che si trovano in quella stanza ….

E ancora tutti   gli altri strumenti che tutti possediamo, e che noi tutti utilizziam senza nemmeno prestarci attenzione…

Cosa faremo una volta che il petrolio è finito?

Il mio prossimo computer portatile sara’  fatto di legno?   Come in un cartone animato dei Flinstones?

Avremo ancora i computer tra 20-30 anni e tutti gli altri strumenti basati sulla plastica, una volta che il petrolio  sara’ completamente terminato?

Difficult times are ahead of us..

It’s difficult.. to accept, to get ready…

At moments, one may think to be open-minded enough, and to be mentally ready for big changes.. but then, sad thoughts and fears appear.

It’s not easy to leave a well known, “easy” and rich lifestyle for the Unknown… and for very uncertain economical and socio-political times.

I wish I knew how our society will have become in 20 or 30 years… I have no idea, and this frightens me, a lot.

What I know is that  a Change is inevitable. Oil is very rapidly ending. We have reserves for 10 years, maybe 15. Then it will be over. Full stop. No discussions about this.

So we can only try to get ready by time, do our things, move, get a smaller house, change life habits, down shift, “degrow”…

Nothing else is possible.

Difficili tempi ci aspettano..

E ‘ difficile .. accettarlo, essere pronti..

In alcuni momenti si può pensare di essere di mentalità  abbastanza aperta, e di essere mentalmente pronti per grandi cambiamenti .. ma poi, i pensieri tristi e le paure riappaiono.

Non è facile lasciare uno stile di vita ben noto, “facile” e ricco per quache cosa di totalmente Ignoto … e per dei tempi economici e socio-politici molto incerti.

Mi piacerebbe scoprire, sapere come la nostra società sarà diventata tra 20 o 30 anni … La verita’ e’ che non ne ho idea, e questo mi spaventa molto.

Quello che so è che un Cambiamento è inevitabile. Il petrolio sta finendo molto rapidamente. Abbiamo riserve per 10 anni, forse 15. Poi sarà finito. Punto e basta. Nessuna discussione.

Quindi possiamo solo cercare di prepararci per tempo, preparare le nostre cose, spostarci, andare a vivere in una casa più piccola, cambiare abitudini di vita e “decrescere”.

Nessuna altra opzione è possibile.
